April 11th, 2009 -The New Mexico Menace rolled into Tucson like their logo, a dark cloud, looking to spoil Tucson's home opening game. Driving the ball to the Tucson 34 yard line on seven plays before the Monsoon defense blitzed in and Rookie Stephanie Sommers #8 forced the Menace quarterback to fumble the football that was recovered by veteran linebacker Rebekah Lewis #86 on the 40 yard line. Rookie Quarterback Danielle Hurtado #3 quickly tossed the ball back to veteran running back Jessica Livigni #42 who ran the ball 60 yards to score the games only touchdown. Good blocking by receivers Alicia Waltz #36, Wendi Hayman # 82 another Monsoon rookie, and Tammy Thomas #20 cleared the way for J's 60 yard scamble down the sidelines. The extra point failed. Defense was the tone for the rain hampered game. Tucson had one touchdown called back for a holding penalty and another one dropped in the end zone with no defense around. The Monsoon type weather did play a part in the lack of scoring. The Monsoon defense played an even bigger part when they made the only other score of the game a safety. Rookie linebacker Deeana Grimstead wrapped up the quarterback in the end zone with the assistance of veteran players #69 Chrissy Ontivera and #4 Ann Manger, the Monsoon defense made sure it was a safety and two points for the Monsoon, which was the only other score of the rainy game.
Final Score: Tucson Monsoon 8 New Mexico Menace 0 |
