Downey, CA - The 2010 IWFL season opener was this past Easter weekend on April 3rd. Fans, family and teams gathered in football stadiums nationwide, ready to get the season started. In the sunny but windy weather in the Allen Layne Stadium about 400 fans cheered on the California Quake with their thunderstick noise makers, as the Quake faced the Seattle Majestics for the first time.
The Quake took an early lead in the first offensive series of the game, with an impressive drive allowing running back, #5 Monique Zaky , to run in a 45 yard run touchdown with #50 Angela Mims completing a 2 point conversion. The Majestics first look on offense was quick to respond as they drove the ball 50 yards down the field, quickly threatening to score. In a tight situation, 4th and long the Majestics went for it on the twenty three yard line with the endzone in near sight. What was going to be a passing play was thwarted with pressure from #33 Jhamara French-Love and #47 Knengi Martin getting a sack.
As we entered the 2nd quarter the Quake still had an 8-0 lead. The Quake did not waste any time and went to work with another impressive 80 yard drive with the help of a 14 yard pass to#88 Camille Norwood. Two plays later the lead blocking by the offensive line allowed Zaky to break loose and run in a 39 yard rush touchdown; Quake were now up by 14. The Quake defense was unable to hold down the Majestics next drive as the Majestics quarterback, #10 Michel Rene Volk answered back with a 46 yard pass touchdown to #9 Adrienne Wilson, shortening the lead to 14-7. After another score by the Quake, the Majestics had a chance to cut into the lead before halftime. The Quake defense shut them down giving the ball back to the Quake offense with under two minutes left before halftime. With :21 seconds left #3 Deb Kuntz found Zaky all alone down the left sideline for a 4th Quake touchdown. Mims once again added the two-point conversion. Halftime score Quake 28, Majestics 7.
To start the second half the Quake kicked off to the Majestics and as the ball bounced around on the field #11 Alex Kirby recovered the ball before any Majestic player was able to giving the Quake great field position. The Quake quickly scored, increasing the lead to 36-7. The offense continued their momentum and finished up the game with Zaky, Mims and Martin all registering touchdowns. The Quake defense allowed 7 more points in the second half, another deep connection between Volk and Wilson. The Quake wrapped up the season opener with a victory over the Majestics, 50-14.
The Quake organization would like to thank all the 400 fans who stuck it out in the cold and cheered us til the very end! QUAKE FANS ROCK!
The team takes the road this week to battle it up with the Tucson Monsoon, both teams with momentum starting off with a victory. PICTURES COMING SOON!
