IWFL Team Rating System
  1. In an effort to ensure the strongest teams advance to Post Season play, Massey ratings will be incorporated into the Team rating formula. Games against Tier I teams will carry a heavier weight than games against Tier II teams. More information regarding the Massey Ratings can be found at www.masseyratings.com
  2. Since teams are still limited financially and geographically, cross tier play is a necessity. The team rating will take the strength of opponents and schedule into consideration in two ways.
    1. The Massey Rating formula evaluates the strength of opponents and schedule when assigning a Massey Rating to each team.
    2. The Tier I and Tier II records will be represented by a percentage win/loss record with the Tier I record carrying more weight in the overall rating.
Section 1.02 Each team will be assigned a numeric rating using the formula below. Records will be represented as win/loss record in decimal form. (e.g. 10 games, 8 wins = ..8)
  1. Massey Rating + Record Against Tier I Teams + Record Against Tier II Teams X ..9
  2. The result of this formula will be considered the “Team Rating” to determine the standings in each Division, Conference and Tier.
Tier I Each team in a given conference/division will play a like number of games for conference and division standings.
  • Each team must play all other teams in the same division at least one time.
  • The team that receives the highest Team Rating in their Division and Conference will be designated as the Division or Conference Champion.
  • Each Conference will have one team designated as the Wild Card team. The Wild Card will be determined by selecting the next highest rated team after the Division Champions are selected.
  • Division Champions and Wild Card teams will play a set of Play Off games to reach two remaining teams in each Conference.
  • The final two teams will play each other in the Conference Championship game.
  • The winner of this game will be the Conference Champion.
  • The team with the highest Team Rating will host the post season game.
  • The two Conference Champions will play each other in the World Championship Game. The winner of this last game will be the IWFL World Champion.
  • Divisional Standings resulting in a tie will be handled in accordance with current IWFL Tie Breaking standards found in the latest edition of the IWFL Official Rulebook.
Tier II
  • Each team in Tier II will play a like number of games for a Team Rating.
  • The 8 teams with the highest Team Rating will be designated as Post Season Qualifiers.
  • Post Season Qualifiers will play 4 Play Off games to determine 4 Regional Champions.
  • Regional Champions will play 2 Semi Final games to determine 2 North American Championship Qualifiers.
  • The 2 North American Championship Qualifiers will play each other in the North American Championship Game. The winner of this last game will be the IWFL North American Champion.
  • All Tier II post season game locations will be determined by the Executive Council based on geographical location of Post Season Qualifiers. In each game, the team with the highest Team Rating will host the post season game.
  • Regional Standings resulting in a tie will be handled in accordance with current IWFL Tie Breaking standards found in the latest edition of the IWFL Official Rulebook.
IWFL Tie Breaking Procedures
  1. Best win, lose, tie result of head to head competition between tied teams.

    If still tied,

  2. Highest net total of points scored minus total points allowed in head to head competition between tied teams.

    If still tied,

  3. Fewest points allowed in all regular season games played.

    If still tied,

  4. Most defensive points scored in all regular season games played.

    If still tied,

  5. Coin flip conducted by league officer and a witness, neither connected with either team, during a three way conference call between the league official and witness, and delegate representing each of the participating teams.
